Information

The Alluaudia Procera is a beautiful tree-shaped succulent that occurs naturally on the African island of Madagascar. In Madagascar, Alluaudia Procera grows in the south and southwest up to the Mangoky River. In nature, this succulent can grow into a large tree of 8 to 10 meters high.

Green and elongated leaves grow from the stem of the Alluaudia Procera. When the Alluaudia Procera goes dormant in winter, these leaves fall off. Water the plant less during this period. In the spring, the Alluaudia Procera produces new leaves again. The trunk is gray-brown in color and, in addition to leaves, also has spines. The spines of the Alluaudia Procera grow spirally on the trunk. The flowers of the Alluaudia Procera are green-yellow in color and appear at the top of the stem. The flowers resemble panicles that grow to 12 to 30 cm in diameter. When the flowers are pollinated, 2 to 3 mm large nut fruits are produced. These fruits contain the seeds of the Alluaudia Procera.

The Alluaudia Procera is used by the locals for several purposes. Rough planks are sawn from the trunk of the Alluaudia Procera. These planks are used for building huts. The wood of the Alluaudia Procera has the name “fantsilotra” and has the property that it does not smell. As a result, they used to be made into storage boxes in which tobacco and vanilla were stored.
