The Echinocactus platyacanthus is a beautiful ball cactus that occurs naturally in a large area in Mexico. Here this cactus grows in desert-like and dry areas with lots of sun.

The Echinocactus platyacanthus is a slow-growing cactus that can live for more than 100 years. This cactus first grows in a spherical shape, but later grows in a columnar shape. Ultimately, the Echinocactus platyacanthus grows to a height of 2.5 to 3 meters and a diameter of 60-80 cm. Young plants like these have a completely different appearance than the older plants. The ribs are not yet as clearly visible as in old plants and purple patterns occasionally appear on the plant body.

The Echinocactus platyacanthus has a green to green-gray color. The spines have a brown color and are between 4-9 cm long. When this cactus ages, the spines turn gray to black. The new spines on top of the plant first have a red color and later turn brown.

The Echinocactus platyacanthus is not an easy bloomer. For this she must have a really sunny spot in the spring and summer and a large one. When the Echinocactus platyacanthus starts to bloom, it usually does so at the end of summer. The flowers are between 6-8 cm in size and appear from the head of the plant. The flowers have a bright yellow color.
