The Espostoa melanostele is a woolly columnar cactus. In nature, the Espostoa melanostele grows in a large area in Peru. Here the Espostoa melanostele grows on flat slopes up to an altitude of 2500 meters. The wool and hair surrounding the Espostoa melanostele protect the cactus against the cold temperatures that are reached in the mountains at night. In addition, they also give the Espostoa Lanata a soft appearance.

In nature, the Espostoa Lanata grows into large columns of up to 3 meters high. In our culture, a plant of 90 cm is already large. They are not fast growers so it takes them many years to grow. When the Espostoa melanostele is 60 cm high it can start flowering. The 5 cm white-green flowers appear from the side of the cactus.

When this cactus overwinters in completely dry soil, the Espostoa melanostele can tolerate temperatures down to -12 °C.
