Information

The Opuntia Leucotricha is a beautiful leaf cactus species. The green-gray leaves are covered with spines and fine hairs. This combination gives the Opuntia Leucotricha its beautiful appearance.

In nature, the Opuntia Leucotricha can be found in a large area in central Mexico. The local population gratefully takes advantage of this. The Opuntia Leucotricha is used as feed for cattle or other animals. In addition, discs of the Opuntia Leucotricha are also eaten in local dishes. The slices are peeled to remove the spines and hairs and then prepared as vegetables.

In nature, the Opuntia Leucotricha can grow into trees of 3 to 5 meters high. To reach these dimensions, this cactus must be in the open ground and receive a lot of sun and warmth. As a result, ours will not quickly grow into a cactus with those dimensions.

The flowers of the Opuntia Leucotricha are really beautiful. In summer, this cactus produces large yellow flowers with a red stigma that smell wonderful. The flowers of the Opuntia Leucotricha grow from areoles on top of the discs. When the flowers are pollinated, large white-yellow fruits may appear on the discs. These taste meaty and sweet. In Mexico they are sold at local markets.

Because the Opuntia Leucotricha occurs in nature at altitudes of 500 to 2000 m above sea level, this cactus can withstand both cold and warm temperatures. The Opuntia Leucotricha will love hot summers here. When the soil in which the Opuntia Leucotricha grows is completely dry in winter and there is low humidity, this cactus can withstand temperatures down to -7° C.
