Information

The Opuntia Macrocentra is a beautiful Opuntia species that occurs naturally in the American states of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and Mexico. The Opuntia Macrocentra grows here in a diverse area with many different types of nature. This makes her very easy to care for.

In nature, the Opuntia Macrocentra grows into small shrubs of 60 to 120 cm high and 3 meters wide. There is a big difference in the length of the spines and size of the leaves between the different locations of the Opuntia Macrocentra. The leaves of the Opuntia Macrocentra are green-gray in color and turn beautiful purple in the sun. The spines are mainly located on top of the leaves and have a white-gray color. The spines of the Opuntia Macrocentra can grow up to 12 cm long.

The Opuntia Macrocentra blooms beautifully. Flowering starts at the Opuntia Macrocentra in spring and early summer. The flower buds appear on top of the leaves. The flowers are yellow in color and have a red calyx. The Opuntia Macrocentra usually blooms for a few days.

When the flowers of the Opuntia Macrocentra are pollinated, purple-red fruits appear that ripen in the summer sun. The fruits are edible and have a slightly sweet taste when ripe.

When this cactus overwinters in completely dry soil, the Opuntia Macrocentra can tolerate temperatures down to -12 °C.
