The Stenocactus phyllacanthus is a special cactus species that occurs naturally in Mexico. Here this cactus grows in dry desert areas between grass and other low plants.

The Stenocactus phyllacanthus has a dark green color and produces many thin, wavy ribs. Sharp brown spines grow from the areoles on the ribs. The main spine of this cactus often grows straight up and is a lot wider than the other spines. The ribs in combination with the spines give this cactus its unique appearance.

The Stenocactus phyllacanthus is not a fast grower, but after many years it can grow into a ball cactus of 10 cm in diameter and 15 cm high. When the Stenocactus phyllacanthus has a diameter of 5 cm, it can start flowering. The flowers of this cactus appear from the head of the cactus in spring and summer. They have a creamy white color with purple-brown stripes.
