The Tephrocactus articulatus var. diadematus has somewhat thicker leaves that resemble a pine cone and have no spines. And then you also have the Tephrocactus articulatus var. Papyracanthus. The leaves of this cactus are somewhat ball-shaped and have many papery spines. This Tephrocactus articulatus most resembles this.

The Tephrocactus articulatus has beautiful full ball-shaped leaves. The leaves of this cactus have a beautiful gray-green color. No long spines grow from its areoles. A small amount of white wool and many fine thin spines of a few millimeters in size. This Tephrocactus articulatus produces new leaves on top of the old ones. The new leaf grows from an areole of the leaf below. The Tephrocactus articulatus eventually grows to a height of 40 cm.
