Yes, you read that right. The Arachis hypogaea. Something different for a change, not a cactus or succulent but a peanut plant.

Something that has always fascinated me is that peanuts grow under the ground between the roots and not on a bush or tree, for example. The Arachis hypogaea is a subtropical plant that originally grows in South America. The Spanish saw potential in this and spread the plant in the 16th century over many tropical areas in the world. That is why you can find it in many countries today.

This peanut plant is a self-pollinating plant. This means that you do not need 2 or more plants for fruit formation. The plants have already flowered. After this, the flower stalk pushes a pod into the ground from which the peanuts will form. Above the ground, beautiful dark green stalks with leaves grow. These grow between 30-50 cm of ground. For 3 months, the peanuts will grow under the ground. Very handy, these plants are in a transparent growing pot. This allows you to follow the growth well.

Once the peanuts are big enough, take your plant with peanuts and all out of the pot and put it to dry. These plants are annuals and therefore die at the end of the summer. Have you really enjoyed the growing process of the peanuts? Then you can always save a few and sow them again next spring. That way you start all over again.
