The Austrocylindropuntia floccosa is a special cactus species that occurs naturally in mountain areas in Peru and Bolivia. Here this cactus grows on rocky slopes and dry grasslands up to an altitude of 4700 meters.

The Austrocylindropuntia floccosa has a dark green color. She creates cylindrical trunks that grow on top of each other. The new trunks often grow again from the top of the previous trunk. The trunks can reach 15 cm in height and 6 cm in diameter. Because the Austrocylindropuntia floccosa grows in areas where it can become very cold at night and the sun is very bright during the day, it covers its body with many thin white to white-gray hairs. Light-colored thick spines grow between these hairs. New growth on top of the plant often has thin cylindrical leaves. These disappear later during the rest period.

The Austrocylindropuntia floccosa is not an easy bloomer. A cold winter with temperatures below zero can help with this. The Austrocylindropuntia floccosa usually blooms in the spring. The flower color is very variable and can vary from yellow, orange to red.

When this cactus overwinters in completely dry soil, the Austrocylindropuntia floccosa can tolerate temperatures down to -15 °C.
