The Opuntia basilaris var. caudata is a beautiful form of Opuntia basilaris. Its leaves are thicker, short and often more elongated. The green-blue color is also more visible in this variant. In the Opuntia basilaris var. caudata, new discs often grow from the lower leaves and not the newest upper leaves. The discs of Opuntia basilaris var. caudata sometimes turns completely purple in winter and early spring, at cool temperatures and plenty of sunlight.

If this cactus is happy with you, it will bloom in the spring and/or summer. The flowers then appear on top of her leaves and have a purple-pink color.

When this Opuntia overwinters in completely dry soil, the Opuntia basilaris var. caudata tolerate temperatures down to -15 °C.
