The Opuntia Santa Rita is a beautiful cactus species that occurs naturally in the southern United States and northern Mexico. Here this Opuntia grows on sandy and rocky plains.

The Opuntia Santa Rita has a beautiful gray-blue color. When this cactus is kept cold and very light in winter, its leaves take on a beautiful purple glow. This first starts on top of the leaves and then extends over the entire leaf. As with other Opuntias, the Opuntia Santa Rita produces new leaves on top of the old leaves. This way this cactus eventually grows into a beautiful full bush. The spines of the Opuntia Santa Rita are mainly located on top of the discs. They can grow up to 10 cm long and are light to dark brown in color.

The Opuntia Santa Rita blooms with us at the end of spring. On top of the discs are the flower buds that grow into beautiful large yellow flowers.
