Information

Normally the Pachycereus Marginatus is a columnar cactus that grows into long columns. This crystal shape does it slightly differently. The Pachycereus Marginatus Cristaat grows in a comb shape. This means that each cactus grows into a unique shape. None are really the same and that is what makes this cactus so unique.

General information Pachycereus Marginatus

The Pachycereus Marginatus is a beautiful symmetrically growing column cactus. Unlike many large columnar cacti, the Pachycereus Marginatus has fine spines growing from the end of the ribs of this cactus. In nature, the Pachycereus Marginatus occurs in a very large area in Mexico.

The Pachycereus Marginatus rarely produces side arms and can grow to a large size. In nature, columnar cacti of this Pachycereus have been found that were up to 15 meters high. In our culture, however, a trunk of 4 meters is already very high. The diameter of the trunk of this column cactus is between 15 and 20 cm at these heights.

The spines of the Pachycereus Marginatus are white and yellow in color. The newly grown spines on the head of the cactus are red in color. Later these turn back to the same color as the rest of the spines.

The flowers of the Pachycereus Marginatus are pink-red in color and grow from the side of the cactus. With larger plants you will get a large row of flowers from the side. The Pachycereus Marginatus blooms with us at the end of spring. When the flowers are fertilized, yellow-red fruits develop. These grow to 4 cm in size and are full of seeds.

Because the Pachycereus Marginatus grows straight and rarely branches, this cactus is often used in Mexico to make a fence. The plants are then planted tightly against each other in a straight line.

Over the years, the naming of the genus of this cactus has often changed. As a result, you will also encounter this cactus under the names: Marginatocereus Marginatus, Stenocereus Marginatus and Lemaireocereus Marginatus.
