Information

Thelocactus bicolor is a beautiful cactus species that occurs naturally in the north of the Chihuahuan desert. Here this cactus grows in limestone and rocky soil on hill slopes up to an altitude of 2200 meters.

The Thelocactus bicolor has a dark green color with yellow, sturdy yellow spines. The new spines on top of the cactus have a purple-red color. These later turn yellow when they get older. The Thelocactus bicolor is a relatively fast grower and eventually grows into a cactus of 20 cm high with a diameter of 12 cm.

The Thelocactus bicolor blooms with us in the summer. Its flower bud appears from the head of the cactus. The flower petals of the flowers are purple at the end, become light pink towards the center and are bright red in the heart. This color combination in the flowers has given this Thelocactus the name bicolor.

When this cactus overwinters in completely dry soil, the Thelocactus bicolor can tolerate temperatures down to -7 °C.
